Installing home electronics can be a complex venture. Simply installing a new television can present issues that are not readily apparent, including:
- Where should the television go? Is it necessary to get an entertainment center, or to consider mounting the unit directly to a wall?
- What is the best way to deal with all of the cords? Is a wireless system a good option?
- Is there a way to feed the television audio into the audio system for a better sound?
These are all important considerations. However, in earthquake country, mounting the equipment securely is one of the most important considerations.
Are Your Electronics at Risk?
In the United States, earthquake country follows the volcanic line at the West Coast. However, shifting tectonic plates have caused serious land movement in all parts of the world. Even those living earthquake capitals such as Los Angeles or San Francisco do not always have to deal with significant quakes. However, when they come, unprepared households can experience significant damage. Expensive home electronics can be a part of the most devastating losses.
Secure Mounting
Decades ago, early television sets were more immune to earthquake damage. Heavy units were not going anywhere and were relatively safe unless a wall fell on them. Modern television sets are somewhat middle heavy – it takes a lot less force to tip them. Audio consoles and speakers are at similar risk.
Simply providing a secure mounting for a wall-hanging television is a non-trivial task. Do-it-yourselfers worry if the mounting screws are big enough or long enough. They are not sure about finding the proper house supports for mounting. Earthquakes complicate the problem as they exert more force on the mounting hardware than otherwise. Professionals have the training to make the right choices of hardware and mounting position.
Remove the Risk
The general idea is that, if the house survives, the home electronics should survive as well. Professional installers have the expertise to make this happen. Many homeowners leave home electronics installation to the professionals simply to enjoy the peace of mind of knowing their entertainment components are safe.
